Tips & tricks

2. Changing 1 vowel or 1 consonant

One way of playing with words is to change a letter in a word to give you another word, i.e a Pun, but the trick is to only change one and one alone as changing more would make the new word sound nothing like the original one.

i.e the capital of Morocco is Rabat and the link is Tommy Cooper pulling a rabbit out of his fez. So only the second 'a' in Rabat has been replaced by an 'i'. If you also changed the 't' to 'd' the result would be rabid which of course doesn't sound remotely like rabat.

So when you have two words to link you can change various letters in both words and come up with a host of others and hopefully you will find two that work.

So if you changed the second vowel you get Moricco, Morecco, Morucco, Moracco but changing the first vowel doesn't change the sound enough. You could also change any of the three consonants 'm', 'r' & 'c' and you get countless more possibilities along with changing the letters in Rabat so you suddenly end up with about 50 new words to play with even though most of them don't exist. So you are using the 'trial & error' theory which could take 5 seconds to produce your link, i.e Morocco & Rabbit. The process could, of course take much longer - but the challenge of identifying the link adds to the fun.

It's not a talent or skill but a learning tool which we can all adopt.
