Whoever coined it the Penny-Farthing deserves a medal.
The Penny-farthing is truly a bonkers form of transport. What was the inventor thinking? Penny-farthing is a very satisfying word to say. So, my theory is he thought of the expression and needed to apply it to something. Therefore, he felt compelled to invent this most ridiculous of contraptions but goodness knows what was going through his mind......was it a status symbol or something? My guess is that if you were knocked off a normal boneshaker you risked getting knocked down by a motor. So he thought....'I'll make it so high that if the rider comes off he'll land on the pavement the other side of the road thereby avoiding oncoming traffic'. Genius!
Forgive me if you know the following fact but it's a goodie. When cars first hit the road there was a 4mph speed limit which is funny in itself. However, the delightfully joyous bit is that every car had to have a person walking in front of it, obviously striding at a fair old lick, holding up a flag. I presume that if the car was involved in a collision with another car, the two fellas in front also ended up in a heap on the floor? It would make a splendid Harry Enfield 'Cholmondley-Warner' sketch.
'No hard shoulder for 310 yards'....what is that motorway sign all about? Either move it 10 yards or lie! There are many spods out there but I can't see them with their personalised pedometer pacing this one out. Standing on platform 8 at Reading in a cagoule holding a soaked notepad has far more appeal. Saying that, me having a pop at these boys is a tad harsh as I do like to count how many carriages there are on a train when it roars through a station - 12 is such a buzz. Hmm, this is a worry.......nurse! 'Heavy plant crossing' conjures up all sorts of hilarious images.
A couple more observations then I'm done........1. Why do Chris Evans, Peter Kay and Ricky Gervais have such high-pitched giggly laughs? 2. What are Twin Towns all about?
Your chance to get involved
The site is a meeting-place for linkers & learners alike. So if you have a 'bizarro' link for the most random of facts, then submit it to the site and let's see if the people from Del Monte say 'Yes'. As it's an evolving site, you can request anything to be linked, absolutely anything. Linking knows no bounds.
Feedback
I would love to get your thoughts and observations on the site, good or bad. This has been a passion of mine since 1995 and it's finally come to fruition which is hugely exciting. However, it's all new territory for me. I would also appreciate your thoughts on the two books if you have recently parted with some lolly and bought one/both of them - any feedback is good feedback! So any guidance or tips on what does and doesn't work will be warmly received - please let me know by sending an email to Feedback

Let's finish off with an extremely handy link which requires a bit of work but will be worth the journey as it's a good thing to know, in Sir Linkalot's humble opinion......
The 13 Original Colonies (now States) of the USA were Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, North & South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and New Hampshire
If you can connect Adele and George Michael singing Christmas Carols about the Virgin Mary whilst riding Penny-farthings on a massive road trip from York to Jersey via Hampshire then you're a better linker than I am!
Don't knock it until you tried it!
All the linking best.
Regards
Sir Linkalot
