Newsletter 3 -

Hi de hi linkeroonies

I hope all’s well in Linksville, Arizona. (sorry, go with me, I will improve)

The Power of Linking

An 11 year old linker emailed me last week saying that she was bored as ‘School’s out’ and she didn’t know what to do before she leaves for her two week holiday. So I told her to go onto the site and learn the ‘Squared numbers between 10 & 20’ which she proceeded to do in just over five minutes. I then tested her to make sure she hadn’t learnt them by rote asking her for each link which she duly gave! She is thrilled to bits and even threw in a commendable link for good measure! Her favourite was 17 squared by the way, which is a belter it has to be said!

Update

It’s great to see so many of you submitting links and embracing the whole concept. Linking has been around for centuries but it’s been underused as a learning-tool. Learning by rote, overlong acronyms or mind-mapping is tedious and not foolproof. Linking injects humour into learning and is foolproof,  providing the link is a goodie of course! Another fat plus about linking is that it’s global and knows no bounds! A user called Zokica (welcome aboard Zoks) has done two links for Macedonia (its capital and National Day of Independence) and I’m just waiting for his/her links for the National Dish & Costume….marvellous!!

You will see, below, a new entry on the leaderboard who has done a mighty fine impression of Westlife in their pomp and roared straight to number 1 …..and it’s one of the fairer sex too!

Your chance to get involved

As I have said on my video, the site is a meeting-place for linkers & learners alike and I hope you fall into both categories. If you have a link for anything, absolutely anything, regardless of how random, then submit it and I’ll throw it out into the stoop to see if the cat licks it up. If you have a link but can’t quite nail it, then submit it and I’ll get some ‘tidy, tidy’ action on board. If it's a strong link, it will go in the book (as will your name) and if it's a link to put all other links to shame, then it will have a colour cartoon by it scribed by one of England's finest, Bill Stott (McTotty to his mates even though he is nearly 70!).

Top Linkers

Congratulations to the following 10 linkers for having the highest average score, per link, as of  July 31st.
Welcome aboard Claire, you will take some stopping as you have come out with some ‘whizz bang, slap my thigh’ links and stacks of them to boot! Come on boys, what’s got into you?? All us men are good for is sport & triv and Adams is walking all over us!!!
The linker in the number 1 spot, come Dec 31st, will be crowned Champion Linker for 2008 and receive a trophy!
Bear in mind that this is how you will be known in the book. So it maybe worth changing your user name to your real name & city to prove to your friends that it is actually you! You can always keep the mystery going for a while....

The 3 Golden Rules of Linking

i)    Make it as short as possible. Don’t add anything to a pure link. i.e Garbage

ii)    If it’s not a pure link, then make it funny i.e 'Hinckley'

iii)    If it’s not funny then make it so ridiculous to make it unforgettable i.e 'Nickel

(Type ‘Garbage’, ‘Hinckley’ & ‘Nickel’ in the search box on the site to see what I mean)

Feedback

I would love to get your thoughts and observations on the site, good or bad. This has been a passion of mine since 1995 and it's finally come to fruition which is hugely exciting.  It's new territory for me so any guidance or tips on what does and doesn't work will be warmly received - please let me know at andy.salmon@thinkalink.co.uk . If you would like something linked then let me know and we’ll see what we can do!

Competition (see Competition page)

Future Newsletters

Please let me know if you would prefer for me not to contact you in this way and I will take you off my newsletter circulation list. If that is the case, please accept my apologies.

I’ll leave you with a couple of goodies……

The 1960 Summer Olympics took place in Rome

60s icon, Audrey Hepburn, announced herself to the World in the classic film 'Roman Holiday'.

Benign means Gentle/Mild/Kind/Harmless:

Was Hitler gentle, mild, kind & harmless? That'll be a 'nein' then!!

Keep spreading the joy one and all.

Regards
