links and counting.

Newsletter 2 -

Hey ho Linkers,

I hope all’s well in the land of linking.

Update

Thinkalink conducted a survey recently asking adults 10 general knowledge questions which all have links on the site) that are on the Key Stage 2 Syllabus (i.e 7 to 11 year olds) which was covered by the Daily Mail (see attached) and the Daily Telegraph online (the article is slightly misleading as it implies seven year olds would know these things which isn’t quite right, eleven is a more accurate age). As always with these things the results were interesting to say the least! It’s not a case of people not knowing, it’s people not remembering and this is where Thinkalink comes into play.

You will see at the top that there are a couple of new tabs….’Top Linkers’ (see below) and the  'Hype' which is in its early stages. There will be a lot more whistles & bells to add to it i.e latest news, quotes from celebs, link of the week, suggestions, video/radio recordings and other bits and bobs.

Your chance to get involved

It’s great to see that over the last couple of weeks, there have been some tremendous links, submitted by various users, that are up on the site – Mark Williams’ ‘Sir Fat’ effort for the ‘Meaning of surfeit’ does it for me!.

As I have said on my video, the site is a meeting-place for linkers & learners alike and I hope you fall into both categories. If you have a link for anything, absolutely anything, regardless of how random, then submit it and I’ll chuck it up the flagpole to see who salutes it. As you have probably gathered by the video, I’m nowhere near the plot so any bizarre link you have is mighty fine by me. If it's a strong one, it will go in the book as will your name and if it's a link to put all other links to shame, then it will have a colour cartoon by it scribed by one of England's finest, Bill Stott!

Top Linkers

You can now see at the top of the site a ‘Top Linkers’ tab.

Congratulations to ‘Alan GB’ for being the ‘Top Linker’ for June, decided by average score. Let’s see if you can hold top spot for July. Your links, prior to July, are still counted so you could sit pretty, Alan baby, and hope no-one catches you or chuck in some links but risk lowering your average. Hmm, interesting……

Whoever is number 1, come Dec 31st, will be crowned ‘Champion Linker for 2008’ and will win a cash prize and get a trophy for keeps!  To register in the top 10 you need to have done at least five links. A new user, Claire Adams, has had an excellent start and is looking good for the list for July.

1.    Alan GB
2.    PhilStubbs
3.    alanjb
4.    Shane Fernando, London, GB
5.    jblinker
6.    MARK KINGSTON
7.    Lily the Link
8.    I link therefore I am
9.    Dominic O'Brien, 8 times World Champion Memory Man
10.    andrewlast

Looking at no 9 you will see that the other nine of you are in esteemed company!!

Feedback

As I said a couple of weeks ago, I would love to get your thoughts and observations on the site, good or bad. This has been a passion of mine since 1995 and it's finally come to fruition which is hugely exciting.  It's new territory for me so any guidance or tips on what does and doesn't work will be warmly received - please let me know at andy.salmon@thinkalink.co.uk . If you would like something linked then let me know and we’ll see what we can do!

Competition (see Competition section)

Congratulations to ‘Zoogdog17’ (!) for winning the 100 squidderlies up for grabs for getting the answer right (along with many others!) to the poser in the first newsletter  which was the James Bond Film ‘Licence to kill’ theme tune being sung by Gladys Knight.

I have to assume that Zoogdog17 is just your username or are you one of Frank Zappa’s offspring? Either way, it’s a splendid name.

Future Newsletters

Please let me know if you would prefer for me not to contact you in this way and I will take you off my newsletter circulation list. If that is the case, please accept my apologies.

I’ll leave you with a couple of topical links

The Wimbledon Tennis Ladies Singles Trophy is called the Venus Rosewater Dish:

...and Venus rose....what a dish (!) ....and what a player!!!

(‘dish’ is pushing it I grant you)

Tiger Woods has won 14 Golf Majors

Tiger Woods is the perfect role model for teenagers.

(I appreciate this number will change in time but I have already linked 15 & 16 and am working on 17!!)

If any of you are off for a well-earned break then have a rip-snorter of a holiday and talk to you in the not-too-distant future. Oh, don’t forget, on your return from the sun, to wear white for as long as possible to show off that tan, it’s very, very important.

You are my disciples and it is your duty to spread the news of the Gospel according to Sir Linky that linking, whether people like it or not, is here to stay.

Tell the world to embrace it, not fight it.

Oh the joy.

Pip pip!

Regards

Sir Linkalot
